Jones in turn influenced Sir Christopher Wren, Britain's greatest architect, who studied the baroque style popular in Europe in the mid-17th century. After the devastating Great Fire of London in 1666, Wren helped in the rebuilding of the city. As the premier architect of the time, he designed 52 new churches in London. Many of his churches still stand. The grandest of them, Saint Paul's Cathedral in London, is an example of Wren's distinctively graceful and monumental British style.
