As in every castle, these were the corners and the entrances. Fortunately for the Normans, around this time, there were crusading knights in the holy lands, and word of what they found out there was spreading quickly. Something they found out in these crusades was that in the Middle East, these types of fortifications were built rounded, as this was better for defence. It was said that something that was fired on a round building ricocheted off, whilst on a flat wall, the wall absorbed the full force of the impact, and was very likely to be damaged.
