Most of Whitereads sculptures of an exploration of the interior, in a kind of double sense, which all come from her own memory of childhood, she makes casts of inner spaces of things, of domestic objects like the wardrobe, which was her earliest sculpture, called Closet, which was made in 1988. It refers back to her childhood memory of hiding in the comfort and darkness of wardrobe spaces. This started off a spiral of pieces ranging from the space inside a waterbottle, to the space underneath a household bed. These must have been in the back of her mind whilst she was creating the Judenplatz memorial, seen as, for example, the material is the same, - concrete.
