During the middle period of its history the town was enclosed by walls and a moat, fortifications that, when combined with its strategic importance, resulted in the city playing a decisive role in the seventeenth century English Civil War. Its major period of growth was initiated by the onset of the Industrial Revolution in West Yorkshire. Between 1778 and 1850 the economic boom experienced within the city led to the construction of five major docking complexes; those on the Northern Side (now Queens Gardens), the Humber Dock, Princes Dock, Railway Dock and Victoria Dock.
