This is probably because it is only two years after the Tawd Vale disaster, when on 30th November 1897, between 4pm and 5pm; the River Tawd over-flowed after heavy snow and rainfall. For over 25 years a fire in one of the tunnels in Tawd Vale had been covered and when the water reached it there was a huge explosion that could be heard a quarter of a mile away. Steam and debris was sent upwards 47 feet and some even 100 yards into the air. Luckily there were only two deaths but the damage left to the town was a terrible sight.
