Coke is made in factories that use coal; coke is the remnants of the coal when all of the gases and tar have been extracted. It is a light, dark crumbly substance, and when burned creates think black smoke that pollutes for miles around. Coke is not like other fuels, because it isn't naturally made, it is man-made, so Dickens is applying it to the factory owners, because they have created the mess that they are in, and nobody else is responsible. The fact that Coke is dark, dull and burnt out, refers the people, because they have the same old routine, they could be seen as burnt out because they never do anything different in their lives, always overworking themselves, so it is a metaphor because ...
