... the Durants farmed a fertile stretch of farmland close to the town. The two families arrived centuries ago within months of each other. They had very little and few adult males. It was agreed that they would pool their resources to work the land. This proved to be a productive arrangement. There were enough crops for the family needs and to trade with other people in the town. As the generations went by they became established as not only shopkeepers in the town but successful farmers as well. The little town of Najac now had a high wall offering some protection from the cruel winter weather, marauding bandits and wild animals. In the harsh winters it was not unusual for the great brown grizzly bears to come down from the mountains in search of food and husky wolves to roam in packs across the plain.
