Kasimov is a typical mid-Russian town with a population of around 38 000 people, which is situated in the picturesque surroundings and embraced by Oka river. In the summer of 2002 Kasimov was celebrating its 850th anniversary and according to the locals it was the grandest celebration the town has ever seen in the course of its long history. The town was founded in 1152 by the Moscow prince Yuri the Long handed to protect the borders of the Russian capital from the invasions of Mongol-Tatars from the south.
