Rozelle argues for a sharp decline in inequality in this time period, and hence a steep drop in the aforementioned "U-shaped" graph, whereas Bramall argues a much shallower "U". In any case these studies are in agreement as to the general trend of inequality in China. The reform period did cause a rise in disparity in China in comparison to the levels enjoyed in the Maoist era. I will, in my study, examine the trend in inequality in rural and urban areas, before going on to examine rural-urban inequality levels and then interregional inequality between "coastal", "interior" and "western" provinces.
