The idea of this fluid mosaic model is to stop the cell from diffusing into its surroundings, if this happens the genetic make up of the cell would be lost, and the metabolic pathways would seek a thermal equilibrium, thus destroying the cell. Therefore to have a fluid mosaic model which can control what diffuses/osmosis's into and out of the cell is a feature that is extremely beneficial to the cell.
