The posterior lobe of the pituitary contains oxytocin and antidiuretic hormones, formed in the hypothalamus, and transported to the pituitary within nerve fibres. Oxytocin encourages the contraction of the smooth muscle cells in the uterus and around the milk glands in the breasts.
