It first emerged in the form of rare illnesses such as, Pneumocystic Carinii Pneumonia (chest infection) and Kaposi's Sarcoma (skin cancer). Tests were performed and found out that the patient's immune systems were greatly weakened. Since all these initial cases were among homosexual men, the new disease was initially called Gay Related Immune Deficiency (GRID). By 1982, researchers were convinced that it was not just a gay disease and therefore was given its present name AIDS. In late 1984, researchers discovered that HIV virus was the cause of AIDS.
