The knowledge of DNA and genetics is adding immensely to the understanding of human health including the prevention and treatment of illnesses. The Human Genome Project was completed this year; it has enabled all the genes in human DNA to be identified and this information to be stored in public databases. It represents a significant advance in understanding the role of genetics in human health and disease. It is therefore possible that solutions to the shortage of organs for transplanting, personalised medicine and developments in cancer research can all be achieved.
