VNTR's 'variable number tandem repeats' can contain as many as a hundred base pairs. Every human being has some VNTRs and to determine if a person has a particular VNTR pattern a sequence of tests are carried out on a sample of DNA including, southern blot, radioactive probing and a hybridisation reaction to create the 'DNA fingerprint'. VNTR patterns are inherited genetically therefore a given persons VNTR pattern is more or less unique and varies a great deal between humans. This makes it possible to determine whether a particular sequence of DNA belongs to a person or not.
