The virus triggers an overreaction by the immune system's first responder's and the cells kill not only the virus but the healthy cells as well. Immune cells called macrophages, which usually kill germs, and infected cells are now killing the red cells. The immune systems non-specific immune response to the virus is unfortunately not adapted to this specific type of virus because it is so uncommon that it doesn't fully understand how to deal with it. The communication between immune cells is becoming more clear because the virus can live in the person without killing them, just simply infecting them.
