Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder in which a normal-weight person diets and becomes significantly (15% or more) underweight, yet, still feeling fat, continues to starve. The disorder almost exclusively affects individuals who are females (90%), white (99%) and from 15-24 years old (60%) and of high or median socio-economy classes (75%). (Garner & Garfinkel, 1997) DSM-IV specifies two subtypes of anorexia nervosa: the restricting type who strictly diet and the binge-eating-purging type who rely on purging. Individuals in the later subtype are more likely to engage in impulsive behavior and also have more mood variations.
