Proactive Interference (PI) occurs when old learned information interferes with new learned information, for example, a woman may change her surname after marriage and when asked to sign a receipt at a later date, still sign using her maiden name. Retroactive Interference (RI) is the reverse of Proactive Interference; new learned information interferes with old learned information. The same example can be used: at a date after changing her surname to that of her spouse, a woman may be asked on a questionnaire to fill in her maiden name, and instead write down her married name. There have been many studies into Interference, both Proactive and Retroactive. McGeogh (1942) gave participants lists of items to learn, such as nouns, numbers and adjectives.
