... the goal of psychology in the study of the mind is to understand the nature of human beings - their experiences, desires, thoughts, feelings, abilities and limitations (Rosenthal, 1991). Psychologists attempt to discover why people do the things they do. In response to AI claims, psychologists have no objection to the claims of weak AI, however, it is difficult to accept the claim that the appropriately programmed computer has cognitive states and that the program thereby explains human cognition. Can a man-made computer, given the right program, be said to have true understanding and cognitive states just because this machine can perform a task as intelligent humans can do? In this paper, I will attempt to answer this question and discuss whether psychological explanations in the study of the mind have something to offer to AI researchers that must be taken into account in the construction of artificial intelligences. ...
