In a study conducted by Baddeley and Hitch (1977) to compare the effects of interference and the amount of time that has elapsed since an event on forgetting, they asked rugby players to recall the names of teams they had played earlier in the season. Because some players had missed games through injury or some other reason, Baddeley and Hitch were able to asses the effect of the number of intervening games (interference) and time since the game was played (decay) on recall. The results to this experiment were that a large number of intervening games were associated with poorer recall. Time elapsed alone had very little influence on levels of forgetting.
