Who are these people who have satisfying, successful, stable relationships? According to Aron and Aron (1986) the basic characteristics of these individuals is high self-esteem. Brandon (1969) defines self-esteem as consisting of two interrelated components. Self-confidence, the first aspect is one's sense of efficacy (competence in dealing with oneself and the world). This arises from one's commitment to rationality in guiding actions in such a way that is appropriate to the demands of reality. Such a person is committed to awareness and understanding of what is true. The second component is self-respect or a sense of worthiness. People with self-respect see themselves as deserving to be the beneficiaries of their actions and to be worthy of happiness.
