It is literally more likely for someone to become a brain surgeon than an NBA player (Sim). Needless to say, professional athletes are at a premium. The gigantic demand for these athletes is seen in the $13.1 billion that is annually spent on commercial sports (Anderson). The law of supply and demand says if demand is high and supply is low, then the price will go up. The price, in this case, is the athletes' salaries.
