They mostly used to play invasion, aquatic and contest games; whereas the upper class used to play a lot of court games and country pursuits like fox hunting. As the industrial revolution expanded across Britain, many things changed and so did the way recreational sports were played. Most of England's industrial development took place in small workshop so many workers were paid by the piece - doing 'piece-work' as it became widely known. Eventually steam power became widespread and workers then worked in factories for sixty or more hours a week. Mass production was then introduced in factories and changed the way of production throughout England and its economy. But with this huge change occurring in our industry, many other things changed in which caused the recreational sports to become more commonly known as rationalised sports. During the ...
