This list makes this poem feel like a form of a fable in which animals and insects are presented as humans doing humanly things. "...budgies grousing away like senior citizens... a couple of dogs... a bunch of slatey-backs... some worms... tattered moths, row after row of ants... a handful of Christmas beetles..." The way the poet has described who will attend the service is in the way of a list, like a check list to see the guests who are coming. This technique allows the poet to dash out a lot of information at the reader, but still keeps the flow of the poem and attention of the reader by having a short description of creature.
