... published. The Claimant Count officially represented the number of people claiming unemployment benefits from the government. However the accuracy became distorted as there was political manipulation. Under the last Conservative government a number of groups were removed from inclusion in the Claimant Count figure - designed to lower the overall figure. The ILO measure - the labour force survey - gives a consistently higher figure. It is compiled by taking a representative sample of the population and including those who say they are seeking work and can start in the next 2 weeks. Critics say this can never give an accurate figure as it is only a sample and does not include the whole population. It will however include those who are actually seeking work but do not claim any kind of unemployment benefit, unlike the Claimant Count.
