Before that it was believed that after EU was joined by Poland, it would be overflown by cheaper foreign beers, which rate of excise was lower. However it appeared that producing beer in Poland for Western European markets is very profitable. Polish breweries are the most technologically advanced in the world and at the same time, the costs of labour are low. That's why more beer is exported than imported. In 2004 Poland exported about 400,000 hectolitres of beer, about 50% more than in the previous year. That was about 1,5 % of whole production which was 28 mln hectolitres.
