The United States has a high demand for high and low skill immigrant workers; because of this demand, employer sanctions are used in an attempt to prevent employers from hiring illegal immigrants. This demand for immigrant labor can be explained by looking at the American occupational structure which has seen a significant shift to smaller sub-contractor jobs and a service dominated economy aimed at maintaining middle-class and upper-class lifestyles (Cornelius, Lecture). Employers have begun to rely on immigrant labor because it is cheap, and they are willing to work jobs that most natives will not work. The labor is cheap with wages hovering at minimum wage and immigrant labor is also appealing to employers because they don't have to provide fringe costs, such as benefits, vacation days, or overtime.
