In an article entitled "The UK market for Cosmetics and toiletries - overview", the author states two main reasons of declining: 1) other manufactures have increasingly used natural products to attract consumers, undermining The Body Shop's distinctive positioning; 2) the group has also suffered from the rise of grocery multiples, which have attracted more consumers trough low prices on leading brands (e.g. Tesco PLC, Sainsbury's PLC etc.). Furthermore to quote from Peter Sunders, Chief Executive Officer, "Worldwide retail sales grew by 2% (on a 52 week basis) to £691.8 million in the year under review, with comparable store sales down by 2%. Total sales growth was underpinned by 124 store openings during the year, bringing the total to 1,954 stores by the year end" (For more details, see Appendix 6.2).
