Research into the need for sustainable development has been highly noted in the past few years because people are beginning to realize the importance of conserving the environment before it is too late. This is supported in the WWF discussion paper on principles for sustainable tourism (1992)2, "Maintaining and promoting natural, social and cultural diversity is essential for long term sustainable tourism and creates a resilient bone for the industry."
