The first spa in Britain was discovered in the 17th Century in Scarborough but did not become popular until the 18th Century with the belief that seawater was healthy for you. Scarborough benefited greatly from being a spa and coastal resort. By 1815 about 175 spa centres had been opened in the country (National Trust). Sea bathing increased in popularity and people started to visit the coast in groups rather than as individuals.
