At the same time Michaelangelo, 30 years older than Raphael, was commissioned to paint the Sistine Chapel. The influence of Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling can be seen clearly in Raphael's work for this. The cartoons were one of his most important commissions. Raphael must have been aware of the proximity of his work to Michaelangelo's ceiling, and all his effort was put into making the cartoons perfect.
