I want to first of all give a definition of what feminism is and, give a brief history of the movement leading to the emergence of the women's movement of the nineteen sixties and seventies. Feminism is broadly defined as the "quest for a sexually just society"(Meehan p189) which as a movement has quite a short history that can be best explained by dividing it into two waves. First wave feminism was a diverse nineteenth century women's movement involved in a number of campaigns protesting for equality based on difference, this meant they wanted access to education, voting rights and work but believed that women had a different nature and role to men,-a belief that would be challenged by later movements.
