But to some extent all music is popular, and the term "popular music" is somewhat vague when examining it. It could be argued that one of the main roles for the critic is to define what is "popular." How does the critic achieve this? A critic has the job of targeting weaknesses and strengths of a particular piece of work. Stripping the material to its bones and producing a personal opinion for others to both accept and agree with, or to argue against and state otherwise.
