These papers highlighted the invaluable educational, social and moral benefits of educating pupils with special needs within an inclusive society. "An increasing number of schools are showing that an inclusive approach can reinforce a commitment to higher standards for all" (DfEE 1998, p23) Through legislation i.e. the SEN and Disability Rights Act (DfES 2001) and the National Curriculum for Physical Education (DfEE / QCA 1999) it became fundamental that that all pupils have the right to an inclusive education. It is therefore essential that teachers of physical education ensure that appropriate provision and challenge is made for all pupils.
