They dealt with the poor by putting them into workhouses, if they were violent or insane they put them into asylums, and if they persisted they incarcerated or transported them to Australia. In this essay I looked at the general principles of the institutions and way of life in them. I make specific reference to the House of Correction (Wakefield Prison), The West Riding Asylum, Wakefield (the first in Yorkshire), at the Workhouse and schools in the Wakefield District.
