We cannot expect children to be interested in learning if other areas of their lives require support as well. This has also been reflected in a statement in the National Review of Guidance "Only when children and young people are safe and happy in school will they become successful learners...." (Scottish Executive, 2005a, p6). Fortunately, the child's needs are now being considered in a holistic way and as a result collaboration between schools, parents/carers, children and agencies is now seen as being essential and has been covered by law, policies and research.
