This can, of course, be viewed as either a positive or negative system; however, my belief is that the pros of the Swedish method of education outweigh the cons. To begin with, this freedom of choice that exists in American universities is nothing more than an illusion. Sure, one can choose what classes to take, but the fact remains that one is required to take certain classes in order to get his or her degree, and the only true choice he or she has is when to take them. Yes, there are a couple of electives available; however, these only make up a very insignificant part of one's total education. The advantage of the Swedish system, where everyone with the same major takes the same classes in a specified order, is that people can study together and form study groups.
