Numeracy Strategy, written in 1999, has four main recommendations as an approach to teaching: * Dedicated mathematics lessons every day * Direct teaching and interactive oral work with the whole class and groups * An emphasis on mental calculation * Controlled differentiation, with all pupils engaged in mathematics relating to a common theme In this essay, I will identify each of the four recommendations, and give a rationale for their inclusion, with focus to the main title statement on mental mathematics. The National Numeracy Strategy paves the way for numeracy teaching and its recommendations are used in classrooms across the country. For it states the time frames of taught mathematical lessons and gives teachers planning time to use the time most effectively.
