It may be argued that speaking properly is using a particular accent, which is the pronunciation of words. Contrary to that it may be argued that accent is not important but what we are concerned with is the dialect, the grammatical structures of sentences. It may be argued that 'proper' speech uses regional dialect or that, as we will assume for the purpose of this essay, the statement means using spoken Standard English. Standard English itself varies greatly and there are many types. Are we concerned with 'world standard' English which Crystal (1990 p.275) talks about or English Standard English?
