It consisted out of British professional soldiers who had gained their experience in earlier conflict and wars. The Germans advanced and were killed in large numbers by the British defenders of Ypres. About 3000 of these killed in action rest on the German military cemetery at Langemarck. Later on the fighting was called 'the murder of the children at Ypres'. The German breakthrough did not happen. The fighting at Gheluvelt (October 29th - October 31st) In order to force a new breakthrough, the Germans attacked near the village of Gheluvelt. Here also the fighting was heavy.
