The British Empire grew a lot in India because Robert Clive signed a treaty with the French saying that the French were not allowed in India. During the later 1800's many people went to live and work at India as traders, soldiers, engineers, diplomats and government administrators. By about 1900 The British Empire controlled Canada, India, Egypt, The Sudan, Nigeria, Cape Colony, Kenya, Rhodesia, Africa, South East Asia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Cyprus, The Falklands, Ceylon, Gibraltar and Australia. This meant that one-quarter of the world and its population were ruled from London and flew the Union Flag. As the time progressed more British and Irish people emigrated to countries within the Empire. Eventually the colonies were given freedom to govern. Many colonies became known as dominions such as Canada, Australia and South Africa. ...
