This is not the case in all satires, but from the little known of Juvenal, it seems to be an accurate judgment in this instance. Satire is said to have been invented by Lucilius in the second century BC and it has been said that, "One of the great contributions of ancient Rome to western literature is the development of the genre of satire". Although Ennius (239BC-169BC) did not invent satire, he was the first writer to use the word "satura" or "saturae". The meaning of this word can be literally translated as a sausage, or something stuffed with a variety of things. This is a suitable metaphor for satires as they are filled with a variety of themes, words and meanings, written in a variety of ways. ...
