In 1747 Franklin began his electrical experiments with a tool he received from Peter Collinson in England. He advanced a theory of the Leydon jar and supported the hypothesis that lighting is and electrical phenomenon, he also had an effective way of demonstrating this fact (experiment with the kite). He then invented the lightening rod and offered what is called the "one-fluid" theory in explanation of the two kinds of electricity, positive and negative. In recognition of these accomplishments he received degrees from university of Saint Andrews and the University of Oxford. In 1748 Franklin sold his printing business and in 1750, he was elected to the Pennsylvania assembly.
