The first success of Louis foreign policy was the terms agreed at the Treaty of Aix-la-chapelle in May 1668 after the War of Devolution. Louis managed to complete this war quickly, effectively, cheaply and without huge losses of French soldiers, therefore keeping the aim of keeping the military tradition alive. The terms agreed were fair and the land which Louis received (lands in the Spanish low countries) was moderate to the amount of land, which he conquered.
