The first thing to note about The Turn of the Screw, when discussing the ghostly, is the atmosphere created. Henry James (1843-1916) draws on the gothic tradition with the fireside storytelling beginning of the novella. Tension is built up as Douglas sends off for the letter and when the 'real' story begins the reader is taken off to another large isolated country house, the scene of many ghost stories pre and post-James. The scenario of the young governess looking after stranger's children is also a typical characteristic of the genre. Many of these haunting attributes in The Turn of the Screw are shared in the recent movie, The Others, starring Nicole Kidman.
