If someone in the family never had a job the family was find him/her a role, i.e. look after the children whilst the parents do the work. There was no NHS so people tended to die at a younger age. There was no schooling system, so the children, once old enough, would follow there mum and dad to work and pick up the skills needed for them to follow in their parents footsteps.
