Eastlake published "Hints on Household Taste" at the age of thirty-two. Eastlake was a man who believed in putting up no "fronts" when it came to social standing or home decoration. If a person whom he knew had used a piece of veneered furniture, Eastlake would vocalize his disgust and storm out of the home. This is pretty much the jest of this entire book, Eastlake felt furniture needed to be of "real" woods, and less emphasis on heavily carved designs and more emphasis on sturdiness and durability.
