Imperialism is the colonization of weaker nations, maintaining control and influence over their peoples. The reasons are mostly economical. The colonizing country can export raw materials and obtain cheap labour from their colonies. At this time it was believed that the amount of colonies was a sign of greatness. Early modern imperialism dates back to the 15th century, however, imperialism in Europe became most popular at the beginning of the 19th century. Imperialism was used to build up European country's empire, they provided a big economical and material source. This is one of the reasons Britain was so powerful in the 19th century, controlling 1/4 of the world's population, land surface and 70% of the ships.
