... the time was right for the invasion in France. In addition the Allies almost ended the U-boat Peril in the Atlantic. And by then they were producing enough aeroplanes to carry the air war in to the heart of Germany. The Suez Canal in Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea were important to Britain, as it was the way to the oil fields in the Middle East. So Britain fought Germany and Italy in North Africa to stop them getting to the Suez Canal. Finally, they did succeed because they managed to defeat the German army (lead by Rommel) in October 1942 and then in 1943 they started to cross the Mediterranean to their next aim which was Italy.
