The Cogito is important in that it suggests three things. Firstly it establishes Descartes' existence. Secondly, it provides a general criteria for truth and certainty: that when he conceives something very clearly and very distinctly, it is true. Thirdly, Descartes discovers his nature, of being a thinking thing, and these aid him in his quest to rebuild his knowledge. Through the Cogito Descartes proves that he does exist; this point is generally accepted. However the nature of the Cogito is strange in that he only proves that he exists so long as he thinks; it is not a timeless declaration.
