... this essay I will attempt to show that Plato's argument for the theory of Forms is ambiguous as the existence of the world of Forms remains a mystery because there is no way of actually knowing if it exists or not. Plato believed that beyond the 'material world' there is a world of ideas of which all material things are imperfect models. He uses an example called 'The Myth of the Cave' to express how imperfect our world and senses actually are, our perceptions of everything are shadows compared to real perfection (Chappell, The Plato Reader, Reading 34, 514A-519A). Jostein Gaarder uses a good example in his book, Sophie's World, where he compares human imperfect models to gingerbread men in a bakery.
